I think everyone (even the children) know that Champagne is what you drink when you are celebrating a special occasion. But the question is what occasions are appropriate to pop open that special bottle you have been saving? Don’t worry, I am here to help you understand what you should be celebrating with a glass of the bubbly, so that you can make sure your supply is at the right level. You don’t want to be a chump that doesn’t have any Champagne when someone wants to make a toast.
First, let’s talk about Champagne for a little bit. What exactly is it? It’s a sparkling wine typically made from grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir. In actuality, only a sparkling wine that is made in, and uses the grapes grown in, the Champagne region of France may be called Champagne. The wine makers of that region actually have to abide by very strict regulations when it comes to producing Champagne. Anything produced anywhere else is technically supposed to be called a sparkling wine and, for the most part, wine communities are good about following this rule.
How does Champagne come to be what it is? The bubbly nature of Champagne comes from the secondary fermentation process (if you want full details of the fermentation process of wine, there is an article here) when the wine maker adds a bit of sugar and yeast to still wine. The sugar and yeast get converted to alcohol and carbon dioxide (this is what causes the bubbles.) This process occurs in either the bottle or a tank. Champagnes range from dry to sweet, and are described as (starting with the least amount of sugar) Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Sec, Demi-Sec, and Doux. Brut would probably be the one we are all most familiar with. It usually has an alcohol by volume (ABV) content of 11% to 13%, and can offer flavors like citrus, apple, vanilla, strawberry, and peach. DRINK IT. IT’S DELICIOUS.
So what are the appropriate occasions for Champagne? Here is a list for you!
- Celebrating the New Year.
- You and/or someone you know got a new job.
- You got a raise.
- You and/or someone you know had a new baby. (I wouldn’t suggest popping it open in the delivery room.)
- You woke up to live another day.
- The sun is out.
- The moon is out.
- You just finished a bottle of Champagne.
- You just got stung by a bee, and didn’t die.
- You were the top bidder for that American Girl doll on eBay.
- Someone “Liked” your Facebook post.
- That terrible co-worker you hate is being cheated on by her husband.
- You read a whole book.
- Your favorite song was played on the radio.
- It’s casual Friday.
- One Direction broke up.
- The cast of “Full House” is reuniting.
If there are other occasions you think deserve a glass of bubbly, do send me a message and let me know. I’m always looking for reasons to celebrate in order to help cure a crippling depression. (I’m kidding. It’s just a mildly burdensome depression.)
